A gift to the church
Our standards have not changed -- that is the phrase I keep hearing now that we have adopted the PUP report.
Hopefully, people will accept this and move on with being the church.
As Marge Carpenter, former moderator, said on the floor of the GA, "I'm tired of this conflict. It's getting in way of the church, in the way of mission, in the way of evangelism."
The PUP report has been called a gift to the church. Let's accept it as a gift and move on.

Moving on would be nice, but I'm scared to see what that means. As one of the elders pointed out during the debate on PUP, this will just take the national debate on ordination standards down to the level of presbyteries and local congregations themselves, most of whom are just as split as the whole denomination. I wish I could see it more positively, but I'm afraid this "gift" will keep on giving and prove to be more costly than we think.
If it's a gift, it's a gag gift. It's not even clear exactly what this resloution accomplishes; looking at what's actually on paper makes it look like it's really a recommendation without fangs.
I think the adoption of this report is simply a way for this GA to avoid making any sort of hard and fast decision on ordination standards. Don't worry, they'll be back in 2008.
